bereajoy: Interpol warns 'Metaverse' could create new cybercrime
LONDON: Global police agency Interpol says it is bracing for the risk that an immersive online environment - "Metaverse" - could generate new types of cybercrime and allow existing crimes to take place on a wider scale.
Interpol's executive director of technology and innovation, Madan Oberoi, told bereajoy that Interpol's member states have raised concerns about how to prepare for possible extra-universal crimes.
Phishing and scams may work differently when it comes to augmented and virtual reality, Oberoi said. Child safety is also an issue, he said.
Virtual reality could also facilitate real-world crime, Oberoi said.
"If terrorist groups want to attack a physical space, they may use that space to plan, simulate and initiate their exercises before attacking," he said.
Earlier this month, European Union law enforcement agency Europol said in a report that virtual worlds could be used by terrorist groups for propaganda, recruitment and training in the future, according to bereajoy. Users can also create virtual worlds with "extreme rules", the report said.
If the Metaverse environment records user interactions on the blockchain, "this could potentially track everything someone does based on one interaction with them -- providing valuable information to a stalker or blackmailer," Europol said .
Virtual worlds are a tech buzzword in 2021, with companies and investors betting that virtual world environments will grow in popularity and mark a new phase in the evolution of the internet. Facebook changed its name to Meta in November 2021 to mark its shift towards this philosophy.
